The Review

Apart from material held in Hackney Archives the Club is fortunate to have acquired an almost complete set of the School Magazine, 'The Review', which is a prime source of historical information.

From sources such as this we can learn of "famous" Old Grocers of the past and of events in the history of the School. The Fire of 1963, the re-building of the School are items within living memory. The names of members of Staff, sometimes those who only served for a short period, can also be gathered where other records have since been lost.

A casualty of the 1963 fire was the Book of Remembrance. The Roll of Honour was published in 1972 as a Frontispiece to the History of the School written by Old Boy Geoffrey Alderman. With the History out of print, and unlikely to be reprinted in that form at affordable cost, a project is under way to retrieve information from 'The Review' to enable us to pay tribute to all those reported as having served in both World Wars.

Information has also been gathered from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Committee Member Steve Bench is collecting photographs of as many of the gravestones and memorials as possible. Articles written by those who survived can also be of interest and we hope to produce something for distribution to interested members in due course.

We are missing the issues of 'the Review' published during World War 2 and, whilst photocopies can be obtained from Hackney Archives, it would be good if the Club were able to have its own 'original' copies. Should you know of any existing copies please advise the Club Secretary (details on the Contacts list.).
