This is the story of the last months of what had been the proud institution known and loved by generations of students and to the population of Hackney and the surrounding area as "The Grocers".
Betty Hales, the last Headteacher, with Professor Sally Tomlinson, Maureen Tomlinson and Jeff Davies have placed on the record their view of the struggles of the last month's which lead the Tory Government to intervene in the Labour-controlled Hackney Council-run School and to order its closure.
It is not a happy story but one which needs to be understood - perhaps especially by Old Boys. Quite clearly it was the future generations of would-be boys at the School who have been let down and denied the kind of education enjoyed by us at Hackney Downs.
